Writing tips from my former newspaper editors

Writing tips from my former newspaper editors

By Kevin Allen | Posted: August 12, 2012
I worked in professional newsrooms since high school, and in that time I picked up scads of writing tips from editors. Here are a few of my favorites:1. Don’t use “over” when referring to an amount. Instead of saying, “Over 10,000 people are expected to attend the event,” use, “More than 10,000 people are expected to attend. “Over” is a spatial indicator, not a numerical one. An editor pounded that into our heads. Now, I cringe when I see it in print.

2. “Both” is frequently unnecessary. You don’t need to say “Both President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will attend.” The word “both” is implied when you list them. An exception would be when it is shorthand for an already identified twosome: “Shall I bring ice cream or cake?” “Bring both, please.”

3. “We didn’t hire you to write clichés.” In one story, I used the phrase “as the cliché goes …” and the editor made me rewrite it. His point was that if you have to say that something is a cliché,don’t use it.

4. This is the only time it’s acceptable to begin a story with a quote:

“The world is going to end tomorrow,” the President of the United States said in an address to the American people.

Otherwise, there’s no quote that could possibly grab a reader’s attention better than a well-written lead (or lede, if you prefer).5. Never use the word “important” in a story. One of my favorite editors would never allow us to use “important” in a story. We never got a full explanation, but I assume it has everything to do with showing the reader instead of telling them that something’s important. Either way, I’ve taken it as a challenge throughout my career to never use this word outside of a direct quote. I suppose it’s been one of the most important tips of my career so far.

Any examples from your former or current days in newsrooms that you’d care to share?

My Secret Strategy to Send Surges of Traffic to Your Blog

My Secret Strategy to Send Surges of Traffic to Your Blog

This guest post is by Diggy of Flawlessconfidence.com.

As a blogger or website owner you know how important traffic is—and how difficult it can be to obtain.

Traffic is especially difficult to obtain when you are a small fish in the pond, when your site is relatively new and not many people know about you. And waiting for one or two or three years to build your blog before you can get substantial traffic is something that I’m sure you’re way too impatient for. So how do you get more traffic to your website, fast? And without spending money on PPC or solo ads?

Besides SEO, blog commenting, guest posting, Youtube and social media, there is another way.

I recently launched a new blog about how to be confident and my traffic was hovering under 100 visitors per day. Then I implemented my secret strategy for a single post, and traffic surged to over 1000 visits in a matter of hours. It continued into the high hundreds of visits for the next day too!

Traffic spike

I’m about to share with you my secret strategy to send surges of traffic to your website, pretty much whenever you want. It’s a strategy that I haven’t seen many people use, but I think that will start to change soon. The few people who I have shared this strategy with love it and have started implementing it already.

Content is king

You’ve probably read that phrase a million times. Bloggers always tell you that content is king, and to a large extent that is true. But in addition to having engaging, unique and fantastic content, you need to have people who are going to read your content and share it with others. If you have no traffic, you can have the best content on the web, but nobody is going to read it and share it, and it’s not going to bring you any benefit.

However, a big part of this secret strategy to send surges of traffic to your website is to create really killer content. Just one post will do, but it has to be something unique. Something that people really want to read. Like a super-long list post, or a very in-depth analysis, or a very heated debatable topic. Something that grabs people’s attention.

The post that I’m using as an example is titled 100 Ways How To Build Confidence. It’s about exactly what the title states: 100 different ways to build confidence. It’s a very long list post of just over 10,000 words and it took about eight hours to write, edit and format.

There are multiple reasons why an article like this is very effective is drawing mass traffic to your site. Not only is the title something that makes people want to click through to it, when the visitor reads the article he or she can see that it contains useful information and that someone took a long time to create it. That reader is much more likely to leave positive feedback and share the post with friends, which in turn creates even more traffic for your site.

I also used two other articles to test this strategy on separate occasions. The result was the same: mass traffic spikes to my blog within hours.

The other articles I used were Going out alone—here’s how to do it and
10 Things to say to girls.

The secret strategy

Here it is: the actual secret strategy I used to drive over 1000 visits to my blog within hours, with a single post, all while my blog was only averaging around 100 unique visits per day. And the strategy worked again and again on the two other posts I mentioned.

That strategy involves forums. A very simple promotion of a good article on a popular forum will send you boat-loads of traffic. The more related the forum is to the topic of your article, the more traffic you will get, and the better that traffic will convert.

Forum links

Every day, there are hundreds of thousands of people all around the world who are super-bored and have no desire to work, and who spend hours on their favorite forums. These people are all eager to be entertained, learn something, or to discover something new. They are ready to click on new links to new sites, and spend a lot of time if they like what they see.

To go back to the importance of a catchy title and unique, useful content, you can see why this is so important for this secret strategy. The catchier your title, the more people will view and click your thread and through to your link. If your article is unique, members will leave feedback in the forum. This feedback does two things:

  1. In most forums, when a user comments on a thread, that thread is “bumped” to the top of the forum thread topics. This means that everybody logging on to the forum at that point will see your thread first and click on it.
  2. In forums, people love to look at popular threads that have lots of views or comments or high star-ratings. This is because it is assumed that when a thread in a forum has many views, comments, or ratings, that thread is valuable and needs to be clicked on.

So, with a catchy title and useful content, you’ll get people to click through to your site, leave feedback, bump the thread, and allow more users to do the same.

If you’re wondering what kind of message you need to post in your forum thread to get the ball rolling, it’s very simple. All I posted was this:

Forum post

Finding popular forums

Now that you know the secret strategy, you’ll want to know how to find popular forums worth posting on. Fortunately this is very easy because all you really need to do is head over to Google and type in “[YOUR NICHE] forum”. You’ll end up with many results for forums in your niche.

A quick way to tell if a forum is popular is to check the amount of registered users and the amount of users currently online. This is usually displayed on the home page of any forum, towards the bottom of the page. The screenshot below is an example of what a popular forum’s membership would be—this is one worth promoting your post on!

Forum stats

Secret no more!

Let me just sum up the secret strategy in a few simple-to-follow points:

  1. Create a high quality post with a catchy title.
  2. Find forums related to your niche.
  3. Make a simple thread with a catchy title and link to your post.

Note that there is such a thing as forum etiquette or proper conduct. You may need to post regularly in certain forums and build up a bit of a reputation before you are allowed to post links or start threads or begin self-promoting. Even then, don’t do it too often, or you’ll risk being banned.

Be sure to reply and respond to any comments or feedback that you receive in your threads, and participate in the forum generally—after all, if it’s a focal point for your niche, it’ll be a great place to engage with potential readers, build authority, make new connections, and more.

Detroit’s Belle Isle Aquarium to reopen three days a month

August 24, 2012 at 4:17 pm

Detroit’s Belle Isle Aquarium to reopen three days a month

Belle Isle Aquarium (David Coates/The Detroit News)

Detroit — The Belle Isle Aquarium will reopen to the public three days a month beginning next month, city officials and others confirmed Friday.

Mayor Dave Bing will host a ribbon cutting ceremony to dedicate the facility as early as Sept. 14.

The aquarium, which has been closed on the isle since 2005, will be open one Sunday a month and the first and third Saturdays of the month.

City officials have been working with the Belle Isle Conservancy, which will operate the facility with volunteers, for months.

The conservancy group has been raising money through fundraisers such as one held in June to help reopen the aquarium.

Robert Warfield, the mayor’s communication’s director, said this “is in no way connected” to the negotiations the city has had with the state on a long-term lease agreement plan for Belle Isle.

The aquarium, which has several operating tanks that are maintained by the conservancy members, has occasionally been made open to the public for special events. The facility shut down in 2005 after 100 years of opening its doors.

Buying Their Way to Twitter Fame

Buying Their Way to Twitter Fame

Emily Berl for The New York Times

The comedian Dan Nainan performing, left, and views of his Twitter page and a page from StatusPeople that says it can ascertain “how many fake followers you and your friends have.” Mr. Nainan said he bought a block of Twitter followers.

By AUSTIN CONSIDINE
Published: August 22, 2012

Readers’ Comments

Readers shared their thoughts on this article.

“The number of Twitter followers I had in relation to how many people in the world know about me was woefully inadequate,” he said. So in June he bought a small city’s worth for $424.15, raising his Twitterfollower count from about 700 to more than 220,000.

“There’s a tremendous cachet associated with having a large number,” said Mr. Nainan, 31, adding later, “When people see that you have that many followers, they’re like: ‘Oh, my goodness, this guy is popular. I might want to book him.’ ”

It may be the worst-kept secret in the Twittersphere. That friend who brags about having 1,000, even 100,000 Twitter followers may not have earned them through hard work and social networking; he may have simply bought them on the black market.

And it’s not just ego-driven blogger types. Celebrities, politicians, start-ups, aspiring rock stars, reality show hopefuls — anyone who might benefit from having a larger social media footprint — are known to have bought large blocks of Twitter followers.

The practice is surprisingly easy. A Google search for “buy Twitter followers” turns up dozens of Web sites likeUSocial.netInterTwitter.com, and FanMeNow.com that sell Twitter followers by the thousands (and often Facebook likes and YouTube views). At BuyTwitterFollow.com, for example, users simply enter their Twitter handle and credit card number and, with a few clicks, see the ranks of their followers swell in three to four days.

Will Mitchell, the founder of Clear Presence Media, a marketing company outside Tampa, Fla., said that he has bought more than a million followers for his clients, which include musicians, start-ups and a well-known actress he declined to identify.

“And it’s so cheap, too,” he said. In one instance, Mr. Mitchell said, he bought 250,000 for $2,500, or a penny each.

One site, Fiverr, an online classified for cheap marketing services, has several ads offering1,000 Twitter followers for $5.

Heddi Cundle, founder of MyTab.co, a San Francisco company that helps people raise money for trips, spent $5 on Fiverr to buy 200 followers last October, when her site started. By the next month, “we had about 1,100 to 1,200 people on both Twitter and Facebook, which was amazing,” she said. “We needed that to get ourselves going.”

Fake Twitter followers briefly made the news in July, when Mitt Romney’s Twitter following jumped by more than 100,000 in one weekend — a much faster rate than usual. A flurry of news reports purported to expose the practice of buying followers. “Romney Twitter account gets upsurge in fake followers, but from where?” read a headline on the NBC News Technolog blog.” (The Romney campaign has denied it bought followers.) Similar claims were lobbed at Newt Gingrich last year; his campaign also denied that he paid for any of his 1.3 million-strong Twitter following.

Having fake followers, it is important to note, does not necessarily mean that they were purchased. Unlike Facebook friends, Twitter does not require users to approve followers. In other words, anyone can follow you on Twitter, whether it’s your mother or a spammer.

Twitter followers are sold in two ways: “Targeted” followers, as they are known in the industry, are harvested using software that seeks out Twitter users with similar interests and follows them, betting that many will return the favor. “Generated” followers are from Twitter accounts that are either inactive or created by spamming computers — often referred to as “bots.”

Buyers and sellers see nothing wrong with it. “Buying followers generated by bots is against Twitter’s terms and frowned upon by the public,” Mr. Mitchell said. “However, it is perfectly legal.”

The practice has become so widespread that StatusPeople, a social media management company in London, released a Web tool last month called the Fake Follower Check that it says can ascertain how many fake followers you and your friends have.

The tool examines Twitter relationships, said Rob Waller, a founder of StatusPeople. “Fake accounts tend to follow a lot of people but have few followers,” he said. “We then combine that with a few other metrics to confirm the account is fake.”

If accurate, the number of fake followers out there is surprising. According to the StatusPeople tool, 71 percent of Lady Gaga’s nearly 29 million followers are “fake” or “inactive.” So are 70 percent of President Obama’s nearly 19 million followers.

But Twitter is starting to clamp down. In April, it filed suit in federal court in San Francisco against five spammers, including those who create fake Twitter followers. (The case is pending.) That didn’t discourage Mr. Nainan, the comedian. He recently asked about “the theoretical maximum” Twitter followers he can purchase.

“They said, ‘You could probably get over a million, a million and a half,’ ” he said. “And I’m like, ‘Why not? I can afford it.’ ”

7 Lessons to Learn from Mark Zuckerberg to Become a Successful Billionaire

7 Lessons to Learn from Mark Zuckerberg to Become a Successful Billionaire

7 Lessons to Learn from Mark Zuckerberg to Become a Successful Billionaire

By Rahul Banker on July 18, 2012

Finally, I’m back to my writings and I hope you still love The Copy Paste Blog as much as I do and excuse me for being inactive for such a long time but now that I’m back, I promise you some good write-ups regularly. Have fun. Today, I want to talk about Mark Zuckerberg. The most successful youngest individual billionaire at the age of 24 and when I’m writing this article, his website is said to be having 900 million active users and the most amazing thing : He all did it without a college degree and with a project he started in his small room. Enjoy this good read, you’ll love it.

I’ve always loved Mark for his success, the way he works, the way he responds and the way he approaches to the problems. So, here’s the breakdown of those 7 lessons you must learn and notice in him.

Never Put off by Competition

Do you know? When Mark Zuckerberg was working on Facebook, he was going to compete with the giants of his time like Orkut which was backed by Google, MySpace which was boasting his 5 million users, Friendster which had raised $13 million ininvestments but he didn’t bother about this because he trusted himself for what he was doing and that’s the most amazing thing I see in him as an entrepreneur. If there was any other person than him, he might have thrown away the towel but it was the perseverance of Mark and his team which we see as a success today.

Dream Big

As there is a saying “If your dream are not worth laughing for, maybe they’re too small” and that’s what Facebook was about when it was started. Not too many people would dare to believe that a project they had started in their college dorm room would end up becoming a worldwide phenomenon. Mark always had big plans at very early stage of the startup and that’s what has led him to become one of the most successful entrepreneur.

Be Prepared to Handle Criticism

He quoted “You can’t have 500 million friends without making few enemies” and that’s what he looks to do when he try to handle criticism. In its rise to being the world’s most popular social network, Facebook has suffered its fair share of setbacks. Law suits, design chances, privacy issues, ban in several countries and what not? It was his determination which makes him what he is today.

Learn to be Exclusive

Zuckerberg always knew what he is up-to and that’s why he always tried to maintain supply against demand ratio and for that, he didn’t open up the site for everyone at the early stage. At first, it was only available to members of the top American colleges, Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth etc and then as it started become famous amongst those students, many other college students in US wanted to get the access which created a kind of a buzz and demand for him which he was looking for and gained that much-needed attraction towards Facebook from students.

Never be Afraid to Take Risks

What he did? He cancelled meetings, shunned major investors, ignored important phone calls! That was a real big risk he took to create a demand from investors to invest in Facebook when trying to raise funds for Facebook. A normal entrepreneur can’t even think of shunning a major investor for their startup. Hats off to this man for his strategies. Eventually, he had twelve large investment companies clamoring to fund his site.

Believe in What You’re Doing

As I mentioned above, looking at his competitors any other entrepreneur could have given up on the idea but Mark believed in himself, he trusted himself to what he was going to do and today, the world has something which they use daily included in their routine and some people like me overuse it (ha-ha). I know how difficult it is to keep working when the world is partying and the dedication of his is really appreciable. It is very difficult to put in the hours and hours of hard work needed to build a company from the ground up, without truly believing in and enjoying what you are doing.

Be Clear about the Mission and See it Through

Once he said that his mission to start Facebook was to make the world more open and as you can see today, Facebook reunites lost friends, families, spreads news like no other social network does, helps gather people for any event may it be against the oppressive government as we saw what happened in few countries of Gulf. It’s all about keeping the goal very clear in mind.

There is a big debate between people who say it was just a stroke of luck which made him a billionaire and those who say it is because of his dedication, persistence, hard-work and good business skills and I’d be with those 2nd kind of people because I too believe that Facebook was not just an overnight success story, it’s something more than that if you analyze.

He gained everything he has through a combination of hard work, passion, and the courage to dream big. By not shying away from taking risks and moving forward in the face of major competition, it is possible for any entrepreneur to be just as successful. I just hope, you get some motivation out of his life. Cheers and kudos to this man.
